What to Look for in Seat Covers

Experts say that two of the most important maintenance steps you can take to keep your car in optimal running condition are getting regular oil changes and making sure the undercarriage of your car is clean, especially if you live in an area which uses salt on roads during the winter. Corrosive agents are washed away, and oil keeps your engine purring. But keeping the interior of your car pristine is also important in preserving its value, keeping it looking and smelling fresh, and increasing your enjoyment of each ride you take. Seat covers are the easiest, most convenient way to do this. What should you look for in a seat cover for your car, truck, or SUV?

There are several important tips considerations to keep in mind: fit, function, fabric, cost, and appearance. To ensure that you get what you want and what your upholstery needs, take a few minutes to think about these factors.

Fit. Fit is crucial. You could throw a blanket over your seat and it would protect some of your upholstery. But damaging UV rays, moisture, pet hair, and other elements can find their way in. Plus, you'll always be tugging it back into position. A properly fitted seat cover will keep your seat protected and stay in place until you're ready to take it off. It will fit like a second skin for your seat, almost as if it rolled out of the factory like that.

Function. What do you need your seat cover to do? It sounds like a silly question, but do you need it to protect against harsh UV rays? Do you need it to keep you warm on chilly days? Do you need it to clean easily so you can bring your pets or children with you anywhere and not have to worry about messes? Do you need it to be waterproof? Different features will be important based on where you live and the type of lifestyle you have. You seat cover should be able to keep up and allow you the freedom to forget about it.

Fabric. This ties closely with function. Choosing the right fabric for your needs is essential. Do you enjoy water or snow sports? You'll need covers that are waterproof, like custom Wet Okole, a type of neoprene. If you have pets, you'll need a fabric that wipes clean easily and quickly, such as neoprene or leatherette. If you have a need for luxury and are less concerned with mess, velour or leather is ideal. Look into the different types of fabric before you make your decision. Comfort is essential, but so is ease of use, style, and texture. How does the fabric wear? Will it take years of people getting in and out, dogs jumping in, boxes or bags being loaded?

Cost. A pre-fit car seat cover can cost well under $50. You may be very happy with a pre-fit if your car has a common body type and the cover fits well with your seat's features, like airbags, controls, and seat belts. If you have other features or a less common body, you may find a custom cover is more effective at protecting your upholstery. These are designed specifically for your car and provide the best fit. They also cost three or more times the cost of a pre-fit cover. If you can afford it, custom covers will provide years of outstanding use.

Appearance. Part of the appeal of seat covers is that you can instantly change the look and feel of your car, and depending on your choice, you can do it for a very reasonable cost. You can turn that factory beige into a fun Hawaiian print, stripes, sheepskin, or whatever you choose. There is an extensive array of patterns, colors, and textures from which to choose. There is something to be said for enjoying your time in the car, especially during your morning commutes.
